The Professor Józef Pieter Foundation is named after Józef Pieter (1904–1989), a psychologist, pedagogue and philosopher who devoted his life and work to the study of psychology and the mechanisms of teaching and learning, the comparison of pedagogical systems, the process of reasoning and the methodology and organisation of scientific work.
This charitable family foundation was set up in Katowice (Poland) was established in 2008 in Katowice in recognition of Professor Pieter’s extraordinary intellectual legacy and engagements. It seeks to promote freedom of thought and creation through education centered on the pleasure of learning.
After designing the Foundation’s strategy and identity, we launched the The Professor Józef Pieter Prize which honors an outstanding teacher each year, who works in a primary or secondary school, in the Silesian Voievodship, on Teachers’ Day, 14 October. It is awarded to a teacher whose work demonstrates the fundamental importance of education for the development of children and young people; who effectively shares his or her love of knowledge, combines the qualities and skills of an outstanding teacher and a committed pedagogue; is open-minded, tolerant and fair, displaying an attitude and values close to those of the patron of the Award, Professor Józef Pieter.
The Award was jointly initiated by the University of Silesia in Katowice and the Professor Józef Pieter Foundation with the support of the 4 million inhabitants Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia.
